My question for this section is: why do you think that Tom does not recongize ways to get out of seeing Denyse like when he could have exchanged tickets with bridget. Do you think Tom actually doesnt realize he can do that or do you think he just doesnt want to admit he does want to spend time with Denyse?
Well I think that Tom does recognize ways to spend time with Denyse but he just doesn't want to bring it up because he doesn't know how his friends and family are going to react. Although he keeps it to himself Tom wants to spend time with Denyse but he might be afraid of admitting it, perhaps he may be made fun of because of the fact that they are of different race. Maybe they both do like each other but they don't know each other reaction and they both really do want to spend time together. I thin that they are both afraid of expressing their emotions because of what others might think.
ReplyDeleteTom does want to spend time with Denyse since she is becoming his new friend. However there are some traces in which Tom doesn’t want to see Denyse! At the beginning of chapter 5 Tom tells his mother that he doesn’t want to drop off her purse. It sounds to me that Tom only wants to talk with Denyse on other times. Not times like weekends. I have noticed that Tom only speaks to her when they are at school or the time when they car pooled to the movies. I think Tom truly does want to spend time getting to know Denyse but I think he is scared of what his parents or what we have recently learned, what Jamar ( Denyse’s brother ) might think. Tom doesn’t seem like the one to move away from Denyse. I think he knows that if he took ways to avoid her, than she might think he was being rude.
ReplyDeleteThey share a lot of common traits so Tom does want to be friends. But I think he’s afraid since, 1, she’s a girl, and 2, she’s of a different race. He might be timid in what he might say to her since he could be worried of being racist. When they were at the movies in chapter three page 47, Bridget questioned Denyse and Tom on why they hadn’t taken a drag from a cigarette. The way Tom spoke, finishing Denyse’s sentences and piggy backing on ideas, sounded very nonchalant. He didn’t have a hard time talking with her about the children smoking. But as we progress Tom starts to notice that he is becoming attracted to Denyse. This is where I think Tom starts to become aware of the ways he can stay away from her. He may have a fear of the difference in race and what kind of things people will say.
Like what Walid had said, Tom may just be afraid of admitting he is spending more time with Denyse. Denyse doesn’t seem to worry about people black, but I think Tom is worried that if they are in a relationship him being white may lead troubles to her.
I think that Tom doe's not recognize ways to get out of seeing the movie with Denyse and to change tickets with Bridget is because he secretly doesn't want to . I think he really wants to see the movie with Denyse but just doesn't want to admit it to himself .I think he was blocking the thought of changing tickets from his mind because he really likes Denyse. I think that Tom was happy that Bridget bought the wrong ticket because he wanted to see this movie with only Denyse, and I think Denyse felt the same way and I think Denyse likes tom too .
ReplyDeleteI think that Tom does realize that he could have changed the tickets but he really likes spending time with Denyse. Also I think he just told Steve he didn't know that he could change the tickets because he didn't want him to know he wanted to watch the movie with Denyse. And I think Tom does realize he wants to spend time with Denyse but he doesn't tell anyone because he might be afraid. Also when he noticed that Bridget bought the wrong ticket maybe he did want to spend time with Denyse so Tom didn't say anything and he also thinks him and Denyse have alot in common. And when Denyse told Tom she likes sugar on her popcorn to and she finished his sentence he might have thought once again they have lots in common
ReplyDeleteSam I really like ALL of the detail you have and how you tell what chapter and page you are revuring from. :)
ReplyDeleteJenna I like how you said that they have lots in common. I agree !
ReplyDeleteI think that Tom doesn't want to admit that he wants to spend time with Denyse, when we all know he wants to. Like when he discovers she likes sugar on her popcorn, and he feels like they have a connection.
ReplyDeleteLike when their hands accidently touched, when they were grabbing for some popcorn, he said he felt a jolt of electricity.
But like you said Noah, Bridgett and Tom could of exchanged tickets, but I don't think Tom wanted to, because of Denyse. He just wanted to get his money's worth.
@Amanda- I also like how she said that they have alot in common. Since they do, they both like basketball, sugar on their popcorn, they even share the same opinion on cigarettes.
ReplyDeleteClaire said that when he found out she likes sugar on her popcorn that they made a connection. Enhancing their connection was when they touched hands in the popcorn. Which was what I think made Tom want to be closer to Denyse.
Claire, I think Tom feels like he has a connection with Denyse too and when Tom said that he felt a jolt of electricity when he touched her hand I knew he really liked her . I think tom liked her ever since the girl basketball game .
ReplyDelete@Amanda- That's a very good point! Perhaps Tom had a case of "love at first sight." As the story progresses I think Tom is starting to have more feelings for Denyse.
ReplyDelete@ Everyone
ReplyDeleteI think that every one did a fantastic job. I thnk that everyone got all the points and if one person didnt another person did. So GREAT JOB!! I liked it when jenna said ''I think that Tom does realize that he could have changed the tickets but he really likes spending time with Denyse''.
